At the Beginning

"At the Beginning" is a song from the Anastasia soundtrack, and its first single. It was performed by American singer-songwriter Richard Marx, and Welsh singer-songwriter Donna Lewis. The song was written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. It made its debut on the Anastasia VHS, featuring a music video. The song was never included in either the DVD or Blu-Ray releases of Anastasia. It features in the credits of Anastasia.

The song casts light onto the development of Anastasia and Dimitri's relationship, highlighting how they started as strangers and how unexpected their love was.

It's also a reference to the Dowager Empress Marie final line in the movie, where Sophie emotionally exclaims how Anastasia and Dimitri eloping is 'A perfecting ending.' to which the Empress replies that 'No. It's a perfect beginning.'
